AL_A has received three awards from the Council for Aluminium in Building for 10 Hills Place and Oxford St buildings in London.
The recently completed 10 Hills Place was announced the overall winner and also won the special cladding prize. The jury cited excellence in detailing and understanding of the materials and noted the building set the highest example to learn from. The Oxford Street building completed as Future Systems in 2008 won a special commendation for its innovative use of cladding.
10 Hills Place is now in the running for the European award.
10 Hills Place jury citation:
The judges arrived at our decision by consensus and through discussion and 10 Hills Place emerged as the clear winner because of its inventive use of aluminium extrusions to make a sort of shiplap detail that is doubly curved. It is a very intelligent use of aluminium and it is very evidently an aluminium project. A very worthy winner of this year’s Aluminium in Renovation Awards. It shows that Amanda and her colleagues have more than a fashionable approach to architecture. This practice has a depth of understanding of materials. They really understand aluminium and what it can achieve. If you’re interested in a doubly curved architecture or doubly curved cladding or structure, aluminium is one of the materials that can deliver. I commend to my profession that it should study materials carefully rather than just the form of the buildings.
10 Hills Place is a very beautiful project. It brings new life and a much higher standard of performance and comfort to a building off Oxford Street in London. Amanda Levete Architects have created from an existing building an elegant, inventive and durable new architecture. Truly an exemplar of renovation in the first decade of the twenty-first century.
